In the wake of a harrowing weekend that saw the shootings of Democratic state lawmakers in Minnesota, leading House Democrats have called on Speaker Mike Johnson to augment funding designated for lawmakers' security.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, along with Rep. Joe Morelle (D-N.Y.), penned a pressing letter to Johnson, which was disclosed by POLITICO. The letter emphasizes the urgent need to bolster the Member Representational Allowance (MRA), a fund that lawmakers utilize for staff salaries, security measures, and other operational costs.

“The safety of House members is paramount and must transcend party lines,” Jeffries and Morelle stated in the letter. “We strongly urge you to immediately direct the Sergeant at Arms to implement all necessary protections for House members nationwide.”

Currently, the MRA permits the use of taxpayer money for various security expenses, including bulletproof vests and hiring personnel for events and office protection. However, Jeffries and Morelle argue that these measures are insufficient given the recent uptick in threats and attacks, particularly highlighting the need for additional investments in security without compromising payroll.

The urgency of their request is underscored by the historical context of increased threats against congress members, notably after the 2017 shooting at a Congressional Baseball Game practice and the alarming events of January 6, 2021. The Capitol Police have since established satellite offices to better address these threats.

The letter also referenced recent assassination attempts that have involved lawmakers from both parties, marking a disturbing trend that jeopardizes the safety of elected officials and challenges the integrity of American democracy.

“We must act to protect each other and preserve this great American institution,” Jeffries and Morelle urged, calling for bipartisan support to address this critical issue.

A spokesperson for Speaker Johnson has yet to respond to these pressing concerns, leaving the congressional community and the public waiting for what many hope will be a swift and affirmative action to safeguard its members.
