Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) highlighted the urgency of the situation, stating, "The violence and threats against elected officials, including people in the Senate, has dramatically increased, and that means we need more protection, we need more money." The briefing, conducted by the U.S. Capitol Police and the Senate sergeant at arms, was attended by several senators, including Sens. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and Dave McCormick (R-Pa.), who were vocal in their advocacy for increased protective resources.

While specifics on new security measures were not disclosed, Schumer hinted at the need for comprehensive safety enhancements for senators, particularly when they are outside the Capitol. Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, acknowledged the likelihood of a budget increase for Capitol Police. She noted, however, that no definitive funding figures were provided during the briefing. Capitol Police had previously requested a budget of $967.8 million for fiscal year 2026, marking a 22 percent increase from the current level. With the latest surge in demand for enhanced security, this figure could surpass $1 billion in the near future.

The issue of security funding and strategy is expected to gain further clarity next week when Mike Sullivan, the incoming Capitol Police chief, assumes his role and begins to address these critical concerns.
