President Donald Trump is making a strong push for Congress to pass the monumental Republican megabill before the July 4th celebrations, a deadline he had appeared to soften on just earlier this week. In a flurry of social media activity and public comments, Trump called on House Republicans to quickly approve the Senate's version of the extensive domestic policy bill, aiming for his signature before the national holiday.
In a post on Tuesday afternoon, Trump expressed optimism about meeting the deadline, urging lawmakers to remain focused. "We are on schedule — Let's keep it going, and be done before you and your family go on a July 4th vacation," he stated on his Truth Social platform. This call to action reflects a strategic pivot back to a firmer stance on the legislative timeline.
However, the path to swift passage is not without its obstacles. Trump's appeal came amid some discord within his own party, particularly from two Republican members of the House Rules Committee who have openly criticized the Senate's version of the bill. These internal rifts pose a challenge to the House GOP leadership’s efforts to fast-track the bill to a vote on the floor.
Despite these challenges, Trump's message to the House Republicans was one of unity and urgency. "To my GOP friends in the House: Stay UNITED, have fun, and Vote 'YAY.' GOD BLESS YOU ALL!," he wrote, attempting to rally the caucus.
The urgency conveyed by Trump contrasts with his earlier skepticism about the bill's prospects. Before the Senate’s narrow approval on Tuesday, he had told reporters that passing the bill in both chambers by July 4th would be "very hard." Yet, now with the Senate's approval secured, the focus shifts to the House where the leadership must navigate internal party disagreements to meet Trump's revised deadline.
As the clock ticks down to the holiday recess, all eyes will be on the House of Representatives to see if they can overcome internal divisions and deliver a legislative victory that President Trump is keen to sign into law, marking a significant achievement for his administration and the Republican agenda.
