Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's campaign office in the Bronx has become the latest site of political vandalism, marked by graffiti and red paint. The incident, which involved a signage defacement reading “AOC funds genocide in Gaza,” follows a wave of death threats directed at the congresswoman, her campaign manager Oliver Hidalgo-Wohlleben revealed Monday.
The unsettling developments were first brought to light through a social media post by Hidalgo-Wohlleben. He detailed the ongoing collaboration with security officials to ensure the safety of Ocasio-Cortez, her staff, and volunteers amidst increasing hostilities. "In the past few days, we also have received multiple threats on the Congresswoman’s life and we are treating this seriously with our security partners," he wrote on X, a social media platform.
The New York Police Department is currently investigating the vandalism, although no arrests have been made at this stage. Meanwhile, the Capitol Police have yet to comment on the situation.
Local media outlets, including NBC New York, captured the aftermath of the vandalism, showing the stark message against Ocasio-Cortez's recent political stances. This act of vandalism comes in the wake of her controversial vote related to Israel's military actions in Gaza.
Despite her outspoken criticism of Israel's operations in Gaza, which she has labeled as “genocide," Ocasio-Cortez recently faced backlash from the left after voting against an amendment that would have cut funding for Israel's missile defense systems. The amendment, proposed by Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Green, was part of a larger defense spending bill, which Ocasio-Cortez ultimately opposed. This decision has not sat well with some progressives, including the Democratic Socialists of America, who expressed their disappointment in a statement.
Ocasio-Cortez defended her decision in a social media statement, emphasizing her focus on reducing U.S. military aid that contributes to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. “I have long stated that I do not believe that adding to the death count of innocent victims to this war is constructive to its end,” she stated.
As the investigation continues and political tensions simmer, the congresswoman remains at the center of a heated debate over U.S. foreign policy and its implications both domestically and globally. The incident at her campaign office serves as a stark reminder of the divisive and sometimes dangerous nature of political discourse today.
