In a significant move to bolster the safety of U.S. lawmakers, House Speaker Mike Johnson and House Administration Committee Chair Bryan Steil have unveiled an "updated Member security framework," aimed at intensifying security measures for members of Congress, particularly when they are away from the secure confines of the Capitol. This announcement was made during a private House GOP conference meeting on Tuesday.

The decision to enhance security protocols comes as incidents of political violence continue to surge across the nation, heightening concerns about the safety of elected officials outside the Capitol. The urgency of these measures was underscored by the tragic events in Minnesota this past June, where a state representative and her husband were fatally shot, a state senator and his wife were injured, and a potential hit list of other officials came to light.

Under the new security framework, each House member will now receive up to $20,000 for residential security enhancements, doubling the previously available funds. This increase aims to facilitate a more extensive array of security installations at their homes. Members are also entitled to use $10,000 for physical security upgrades as part of an existing initiative.

The funding for these security improvements will be managed through a continuing initiative by the House Sergeant-at-Arms, ensuring that lawmakers' office budgets are not impacted. Additionally, the program will see a substantial rise in the "monitoring and maintenance allotment," which will jump from $150 to $5,000 monthly until September's end, enabling members to contract licensed security professionals for personal protection through the remainder of FY2025.

Previously, members typically tapped into campaign funds for personal security, a practice sanctioned by the Federal Elections Commission. However, the updated funding arrangement allows for direct payments or reimbursements through the House Sergeant-at-Arms, simplifying the process for lawmakers.

The security overhaul also includes plans to expand collaboration between the Capitol Police and local law enforcement agencies. Currently, Capitol Police maintain over 100 mutual aid agreements nationwide to ensure lawmakers' safety during district events, with efforts underway to secure additional partnerships.
