Ghislaine Maxwell, the convicted associate of the late Jeffrey Epstein, is seeking to delay her congressional deposition, setting forth a series of conditions under which she would agree to cooperate with the House Oversight and Government Reform Subcommittee. This move comes after the subcommittee decided to subpoena Maxwell, intensifying the ongoing scrutiny under the larger Epstein investigation.
The House Oversight Committee, led by Chair James Comer (R-Ky.), had previously mandated Maxwell's testimony for August 11. However, Maxwell's legal team has expressed reluctance, initially refusing to comply with the subpoena. A recent letter from her attorneys to Chairman Comer, which was made public on Tuesday, reveals a shift towards negotiation, proposing terms for Maxwell's cooperation.
Maxwell's requests include immunity from further prosecution, receiving the committee’s questions in advance, postponing her deposition until the conclusion of her appeals, and relocating the venue from her current place of incarceration. Should these conditions not be met, Maxwell's lawyers have indicated she will invoke her Fifth Amendment rights.
The response from the House Oversight Committee was swift, with a spokesperson stating that the committee would address Maxwell's requests but ruled out the possibility of granting Congressional immunity. The spokesperson emphasized the committee's commitment to advancing the investigation while respecting constitutional rights.
The situation has sparked debate among House Republicans, many of whom are pushing for Maxwell's testimony to be as transparent as possible. Concerns are rising about the potential for a closed-door interview and any form of immunity, which could exacerbate mistrust among the public, eager for clarity on Epstein’s network and activities.
As the committee deliberates on Maxwell’s proposal, the case continues to draw significant public and political attention, highlighting the complexities of legal and ethical considerations in high-profile investigations.
