In a solemn gathering that transcended political divides, New York City Mayor Eric Adams, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, and several mayoral candidates, including Zohran Mamdani and Curtis Sliwa, converged at the Parkchester Jame Masjid in the Bronx to honor NYPD Officer Didarul Islam. Officer Islam tragically lost his life in a devastating mass shooting in Manhattan, marking a poignant moment of unity and reflection for the city's leadership.
The funeral, held on July 31, 2025, drew not only political figures but also an impressive assembly of NYPD officers, showcasing the deep respect and communal grief over the loss of one of their own. Islam, a three-year NYPD veteran and a Bengali immigrant who was expecting his third child, was remembered as a dedicated officer and loving family man.
The event also became a political crucible for Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani, known for his critical stance on NYPD practices. His presence and participation in the funeral prayers immediately after his return from an 11-day vacation in Uganda were closely scrutinized. Mamdani's previous calls to defund the police and disband the NYPD's Strategic Response Group (SRG) were put to the test as Mayor Adams praised the SRG for their bravery during the shooting.
Governor Kathy Hochul, along with other notable attendees such as NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch and Attorney General Letitia James, also paid their respects. Hochul emphasized the need for greater appreciation and support for the police force, reflecting a broader call for unity and solidarity.
The tense political atmosphere was palpable as reporters noted the interactions among the candidates, particularly Mamdani's engagement with Islam’s family and his participation in the Muslim prayers, setting him apart from other officials.
Outside the mosque, the community's support was visible in the hundreds of uniformed officers and the setup of food trucks and tents, creating a space for communal mourning and support.
This gathering not only mourned the loss of a dedicated officer but also sparked a crucial dialogue on the relationship between the city's leadership and its police force amidst ongoing debates over police reform and public safety.
