In a significant development in Kentucky politics, GOP megadonor Paul Singer has emerged as the top contributor to a new super PAC, MAGA KY, aimed at defeating Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.). The PAC, which was set up by allies of former President Donald Trump, amassed a formidable $2 million in its coffers within days of its founding in late June.
Singer alone contributed half of the total funds, injecting $1 million into the campaign. He was joined by hedge fund manager John Paulson, who added $250,000, and the Preserve America PAC, linked to Miriam Adelson and a supporter of Trump’s previous campaigns, which contributed $750,000. The financial backing highlights the seriousness of the effort against Massie, who has frequently clashed with Trump over various legislative issues.
The move to establish MAGA KY came shortly after Massie opposed what has been dubbed Trump’s "Big, Beautiful Bill," a key piece of legislation pushed by the former president. Beyond this, Massie's outspoken stance on matters such as war powers and the Epstein controversy has put him at odds with core Trump supporters. This discord has prompted Trump’s circle to actively seek his ouster in the forthcoming primary elections.
According to data from AdImpact, MAGA KY has already spent $1.2 million on advertising campaigns aimed at discrediting Massie’s suitability for office. The aggressive spending indicates that the super PAC is not holding back in its quest to see Massie replaced by a more Trump-aligned candidate, although it remains unclear who that candidate might be.
Despite the financial onslaught, Massie’s own campaign has not been idle. The Kentucky congressman has raised just over $1 million this year and reported having $1.7 million on hand as of the end of June. His previous successes in fending off primary challengers might serve him well in the upcoming electoral battle. However, with heavy financial weights throwing in against him, the 2026 primary is shaping up to be his toughest yet.
The unfolding political drama in Kentucky is a clear indication of the enduring influence of Trump within certain sectors of the GOP, as well as the high stakes involved in aligning with or opposing him. As this story develops, the political landscape in Kentucky and possibly beyond could see significant shifts depending on the outcome of this high-profile campaign.
