Oversight Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) announced plans to summon Mayor Muriel Bowser, Council Chair Phil Mendelson, and Attorney General Brian Schwalb to a Capitol Hill hearing next month. This session is scheduled as Trump's temporary control of the Metropolitan Police Department nears its 30-day limit, necessitating congressional approval to persist.

Comer criticized the D.C. Council's approach to law enforcement, stating, "For years, the D.C. Council’s radical, soft-on-crime agenda has emboldened criminals and put public safety at risk in our nation’s capital." He expressed strong support for Trump's decision to commandeer the police force and deploy the National Guard to tackle the city's crime issues.

Despite a significant decrease in violent crime, with figures hitting a 30-year low, Republicans continue to portray Washington as a city beleaguered by crime, spotlighting recent high-profile crimes to bolster their stance.

In a recent statement, Trump advocated for the reintroduction of cash bail, a policy largely phased out in D.C. over three decades ago. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro echoed this sentiment, urging Congress to amend what she described as excessively lenient juvenile justice laws.

Further legislative efforts are underway, with Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) pushing a bill that would restrict "youth offender status" to individuals 18 and younger and mandate public tracking of juvenile crime by the D.C. attorney general.
