Top Justice Officials to Testify on Epstein Case Handling as Congress Seeks Transparency

Two senior Justice Department figures, FBI Director Kash Patel and Attorney General Pam Bondi, are slated to testify before the House Judiciary Committee in the wake of ongoing scrutiny over the management of the Jeffrey Epstein case. This announcement comes from sources familiar with the committee's schedule, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Patel is scheduled to appear on September 17, followed by Bondi on October 9. Their testimonies are part of the Judiciary Committee's broader oversight responsibilities, during which they are also expected to discuss elements of a crime bill advocated by President Donald Trump. However, the primary focus of these hearings is anticipated to be the Justice Department's handling of the Epstein files.

The controversy surrounding these files intensified during the August recess, leading to significant pressure from senior Republicans who have demanded the unsealing of more documents. This internal dispute briefly disrupted the workings of the GOP-majority House, leading to an early recess in late July.

In response to a subpoena from the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, the DOJ began releasing some Epstein-related files last week. Additionally, Alex Acosta, Trump’s former Labor Secretary and the U.S. Attorney in Florida who approved Epstein's previous plea deal, is scheduled for a separate interview with the Oversight Committee on September 19.

Despite these developments, the information made available to lawmakers over the district work period was minimal, with promises from both sides of the aisle to pursue further disclosures upon Congress's return next week.

Particularly under the spotlight is Attorney General Pam Bondi, who has faced criticism from her own party for allegedly withholding documents she had previously committed to disclosing. Her upcoming testimony is highly anticipated as an opportunity for clarification and accountability in the Epstein saga, which continues to cast a long shadow over American politics and justice.
