Republicans are swiftly aligning their support with Representative Ashley Hinson, who recently announced her candidacy to succeed Senator Joni Ernst in Iowa. Senate Majority Leader John Thune and National Republican Senatorial Committee Chair Tim Scott endorsed Hinson, highlighting her strong conservative credentials and alignment with former President Donald Trump's policies.
“Having traveled Iowa with Ashley, I know she is the fighter the Hawkeye State needs to deliver President Trump's agenda in 2026 and beyond," stated Scott. He expressed full support from the NRSC, emphasizing Hinson's role as a "proven conservative and staunch Trump ally."
The endorsement from such high-ranking Republicans suggests that the GOP is keen to avoid a contested primary, which could potentially open the door for a Democratic challenge in this traditionally red-leaning state. Democrats are eyeing the seat as a possible gain, needing to net four seats to flip the Senate.
Further bolstering her campaign, the Senate Leadership Fund, a super PAC linked to the Republican leadership, has also thrown its support behind Hinson. This backing comes as no surprise given Hinson's strong fundraising abilities and her status as a rising star within the party. Earlier this year, she reported having $2.8 million in her campaign coffers, underscoring her appeal to donors and her political acumen.
However, former President Trump has yet to endorse any candidate in the race. Hinson and other Senate hopefuls have been keen to align themselves closely with Trump, whose influence within the party remains substantial.
Hinson, a former TV news anchor, entered the Senate race immediately after Ernst announced her retirement. Ernst, who had previously hinted at seeking reelection, has faced several setbacks in recent months, paving the way for Hinson's bid.
"We need conservative fighters in the Senate — and that's exactly what we'll get with Ashley Hinson," Thune remarked, praising her advocacy of Trump's America First agenda and her legislative achievements in the House.
As the campaign unfolds, Hinson's endorsements and early support from key figures in the Republican Party position her as a formidable contender, aiming to keep Iowa securely in GOP hands.
