House GOP Set to Unveil CR on Tuesday, Vote Scheduled for Friday Amid Security Funding Boost

House Republican leaders have announced plans to introduce a temporary funding measure after a key party meeting this Tuesday, with a vote on the legislation set for Friday. The move aims to prevent a government shutdown and address security concerns highlighted by recent events.

Majority Leader Steve Scalise indicated that the text of the continuing resolution, which would extend federal funding through November 20, is expected to be made public shortly after the 9 a.m. Republican conference. Speaker Mike Johnson later confirmed that the details would be released later in the day.

"The plan is to have the House vote on Friday," Johnson stated, setting a clear timeline for the proposed legislative action.

In a response to the recent assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, Republican leadership plans to incorporate additional funding for a member security pilot program into the stopgap funding bill. During a closed-door meeting, Speaker Johnson announced a proposed $32 million increase for the program. This initiative allows Congressional members to coordinate in-district security details through partnerships with the Capitol Police, local law enforcement, and potentially private security firms.

The $32 million earmarked for security enhancements is less than what some members of the House GOP have advocated for, pointing to ongoing discussions about the adequacy of security measures for government officials.

This proposed resolution and the accompanying security funding boost highlight the GOP's dual focus on maintaining governmental operations and enhancing the safety of its members in a heightened threat environment. The final text of the bill, due to be released later Tuesday, will provide further details on the scope of funding and the specific allocations intended for these critical areas.
