"Our members would no longer be able to work or get paid, but we believe fighting for the long-term survival of federal services is paramount," the letter states.

Alissa Tafti, co-executive director of the Federal Unionist Network, expressed deep concern over the administration's tactics, which she views as leveraging a shutdown threat to force through budgetary decisions that would harm vulnerable populations. "This Administration has long favored massive reductions in force; now, they use a shutdown as leverage," Tafti stated.

Despite the personal financial risk a shutdown poses to federal employees, the letter to Schumer and Jeffries conveys a willingness among workers to endure hardship if it helps preserve essential public services. "Federal workers and the communities we serve will face severe hardship, but we are prepared to forego paychecks to save the programs vital to our nation," the unions declared.
