Kamala Harris' detailed recount of the 2024 election, titled "107 Days," is flying off the shelves, achieving record-breaking sales figures for a political memoir. Simon & Schuster, the book's publisher, revealed that it sold an impressive 350,000 copies nationwide in its debut week, positioning it to potentially become the best-selling memoir of the year. Only memoirs by celebrities such as Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, and Prince Harry have surpassed these initial sales figures since 2023.
Jonathan Karp, President and CEO of Simon & Schuster, praised the memoir, stating, "In addition to being one of the most interesting books ever written about the experience of running for President of the United States, the success of 107 DAYS proves what a galvanizing and inspiring cultural figure Kamala Harris is."
However, the book has not been without its controversies, particularly within Harris' own Democratic Party. Prominent figures such as Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and California Governor Gavin Newsom have expressed displeasure over certain passages in the memoir, which critique the early stages of her campaign and her choice of running mate.
The publicity surrounding the book's release has further complicated matters, with Harris attempting to soften some of her more critical comments during her book tour and refusing to dismiss the possibility of another run for presidency. This stance has exacerbated tensions within the party, especially among Democrats disappointed by the loss to Donald Trump in the previous year's election.
One of the most contentious aspects of "107 Days" is Harris' criticism of former President Joe Biden, under whom she served as Vice President. Harris argues that the White House communications team burdened her with unpopular policy initiatives and failed to counteract negative media portrayals effectively. She reflects that not pushing Biden to withdraw from the race sooner was a misjudgment.
Despite these frictions, Harris mentioned in a recent appearance on "The View" that she and Biden have maintained a relationship characterized by "mutual respect, having been in the trenches together, and admiration," describing it as "sincere."
As "107 Days" continues to dominate sales charts and political discourse, it remains to be seen how this memoir will ultimately shape Kamala Harris' political legacy and her standing within the Democratic Party.
