In a surprising turn of events, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is slowly transforming skeptics into supporters, even as the shadow of past political concessions looms large. Following a criticized decision to keep the government running this past March, which many saw as a capitulation, Schumer’s tactics in the ongoing funding impasse are now receiving tentative praise.
According to a recent POLITICO survey, Democratic lawmakers and activists have noted Schumer's exceeded expectations in navigating the current budget deadlock. However, his newfound support is accompanied by a cautious vigilance, with many progressives concerned that the Senate Democrats might yield under intensifying pressure.
Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), who previously criticized Schumer’s decisions, has observed a notable shift in the leader's approach. “A lot of people wondered whether we would be bullied again, and we have not been,” Murphy stated, highlighting Schumer's perceived resilience in the face of adversity. “Sen. Schumer understands the gravity of this moment.”
Indivisible co-founder Ezra Levin, who had earlier called for Schumer’s resignation, admitted to seeing improvement. “He hasn’t surrendered yet,” Levin remarked, adding, “I call that progress, and we’re cheering him on now.”
However, the specter of compromise still haunts Schumer’s steps. Levin and other progressives worry that Schumer might settle for less robust guarantees in negotiations, unlike House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who has been adamant about securing extended Obamacare subsidies through "ironclad" legislation. “A handshake agreement is capitulation,” Levin emphasized.
The stakes are high, with some Democrats ready to challenge Schumer’s leadership if he fails to stand firm. An anonymous House Democrat expressed readiness to publicly demand a leadership change if Schumer falters, and an aide to another senior House Democrat noted a significant number of lawmakers might support such a move.
Across the aisle, House Speaker Mike Johnson is also under pressure from his ranks to address the Obamacare extension and ensure federal workers, including active-duty military, do not miss upcoming paychecks. Johnson has a packed schedule, including a public call-in show and a press conference, followed by a strategic caucus call.
In other congressional activities, Senate Judiciary Republicans are set to advance several judicial nominees, potentially deepening former President Trump’s conservative influence on the judiciary. Additionally, discussions are ongoing among Senate Republicans about moving forward with full-year funding bills, with proposals including taking up defense appropriations separately.
As Capitol Hill braces for more intense negotiations and possible shifts in strategy, all eyes remain on Schumer, whose next moves could redefine his leadership and potentially reshape the legislative landscape.
