An incident outside Speaker Mike Johnson's office on Capitol Hill has ignited a fiery exchange of accusations between Representative Nanette Barragán and the U.S. Capitol Police union. The confrontation occurred during a Democratic march to Johnson's office on Tuesday evening, aimed at pressing for the seating of Representative-elect Adelita Grijalva.

Captured on video, the encounter shows Rep. Barragán, a Democrat from California, bypassing a Capitol Police officer stationed at the entrance of the office suite. Although Speaker Johnson was not in the office at the time, the footage highlighted a tense moment between Barragán and the officer.

Gus Papathanasiou, Chair of the union, criticized Barragán's actions as “unacceptable” and has called for an apology from the Congresswoman. He commended the officer for his professionalism during the incident, noting, “Tensions are high because of the government shutdown as it is, and our officers don't deserve that.” This incident comes at a strained time, as Capitol Police officers missed their first full paycheck last week due to the ongoing government shutdown.

In her defense, Barragán issued a statement claiming the officer had “forcefully grabbed” her as she attempted to enter Johnson’s office with other Democrats. She later noted that the officer sought her out to apologize, a gesture she appreciated while acknowledging the challenging conditions under which the officers are working amid the shutdown.

“I am hopeful that Capitol Police leadership will ensure our officers are well-trained and do not prevent Members from carrying out their constitutional duties,” Barragán stated. She has requested a meeting with Capitol Police leadership, hoping to resolve the issue swiftly.

Republicans have criticized the Democrats' actions, with Speaker Johnson describing the protest and subsequent incident as signs of "desperation." The event has further inflamed partisan tensions at a time when the Capitol is already under stress from the financial and operational impacts of the shutdown.
