GOP Claims Acosta's Testimony Clears Trump in Epstein Case, Democrats Disagree

Republicans on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee announced a significant development on Friday, arguing that a recent interview with former U.S. attorney Alex Acosta confirms that President Donald Trump was not involved in the Jeffrey Epstein scandal. The committee released excerpts from the interview which they claim show Acosta never discussed Epstein with Trump. "Acosta NEVER talked to Trump about Epstein," stated the GOP members on social media platform X, emphasizing the lack of direct communication between Trump and Acosta during the timeframe of the case.

During the interview, when questioned by Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), Acosta clarified that he had no conversations with Donald Trump about Epstein before his consideration for Secretary of Labor. Furthermore, no documents in the Epstein case mentioned Trump, Acosta added.

However, Democrats on the Oversight Committee interpreted Acosta's testimony differently. Spokesperson Sara Guerrero criticized Acosta's apparent lack of remorse regarding his handling of the Epstein case. "The transcripts of Alex Acosta’s interview confirm what we’ve known all along: he has no remorse for his mishandling of the Epstein case," Guerrero stated. She condemned the lenient deal provided to Epstein under Acosta's oversight, which allegedly allowed Epstein to continue his criminal activities.

The committee has been intensively investigating the Epstein case, leading to the subpoena of the Justice Department for relevant documents by Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) in July. Moreover, Epstein’s estate has cooperated by turning over various materials, including a controversial "birthday book" which mentioned Trump. This has fueled ongoing speculation and accusations from Democrats about Trump's past relationship with Epstein, despite Trump's denials and legal actions against media reports.

Among the new batch of documents released were Epstein’s schedules, which listed interactions with various prominent figures, including a proposed meeting with Tom Pritzker and a dinner with Woody Allen. These documents highlight the extensive network Epstein maintained with influential individuals globally.

The revelations from Acosta's interview and the subsequent document releases continue to stir controversy and debate over the extent of the connections between Epstein and high-profile personalities, including the former president. As the Oversight Committee delves deeper, both parties remain sharply divided on the implications of the findings.
