Democratic Senate hopeful from Maine, Graham Platner, has announced his intention to remove a tattoo that bears a resemblance to a Nazi symbol. This decision comes in the wake of a series of damaging revelations about his past, including controversial social media posts. Platner, who regrets the tattoo he got nearly two decades ago, disclosed the issue during a recent episode of Pod Save America, in an effort to preempt further damage from emerging opposition research.
The tattoo, which looks similar to a Nazi skull and crossbones, was reportedly chosen from a selection on the wall of a tattoo parlor during a night out with fellow Marines in Croatia. Platner has stated he was unaware of its resemblance to Nazi imagery at the time. "It was not until I started hearing from reporters and DC insiders that I realized this tattoo resembled a Nazi symbol," Platner explained in a statement to POLITICO. He emphasized his disgust at the insinuation that he knew of the tattoo's connotations, asserting his plan to have it removed promptly.
Despite the tattoo having gone unnoticed during his physical exams with the U.S. Army and subsequent background checks for a security clearance, recent criticisms have questioned how Platner could have remained ignorant of its meaning. His former political director, Genevieve McDonald, expressed skepticism on Facebook, suggesting that Platner should have recognized and addressed the issue sooner.
This tattoo controversy is not Platner's only challenge; he has also had to apologize for a series of offensive Reddit posts made in the past. These included remarks downplaying sexual assault in the military and advocating for violent political action. Platner has since expressed regret, stating these comments were made during a difficult period following his military service and do not reflect his current values.
In the political arena, Platner's candidacy has stirred significant attention as Democrats aim to challenge Republican Senator Susan Collins. Even amid these controversies, Platner has received continued support from notable figures like Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who defended his character and campaign.
Sanders commented on the situation, acknowledging Platner's past errors but showing confidence in his capacity for leadership and positive campaign conduct moving forward. As the race intensifies, all eyes will be on how Platner navigates these challenges and whether his efforts to make amends resonate with the voters of Maine.
