Texas Democratic Representative Jasmine Crockett is edging closer to a U.S. Senate campaign, as she begins to allocate significant resources for polling and has initiated discussions with a potential campaign manager. In a revealing conversation with POLITICO's Dasha Burns on "The Conversation," Crockett expressed her deep contemplation over the decision to challenge Republican Senator John Cornyn, highlighting her approach to understanding the political landscape through extensive data collection.
“I am seriously weighing it, to the extent that I’m about to spend a lot of money to get data,” Crockett disclosed during the interview. Her proactive steps indicate a rigorous effort to gauge her standing in what could be a competitive Democratic primary.
Since joining Congress in 2023, Crockett has quickly made a name for herself with her forthright criticisms of prominent Republicans, including Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, Texas Governor Gregg Abbott, and former President Donald Trump — the latter of whom has frequently targeted her in his speeches.
Crockett believes that boosting her visibility among Texas voters is just the preliminary phase of a potential statewide campaign. “But the way that I look at elections is that that's just first base,” she remarked, underlining the challenges of early primaries and the necessity of extensive campaign funding to elevate a candidate’s profile.
In her strategic considerations, Crockett has held “multiple conversations” with a prospective campaign leader, discussing not only the primary but also her prospects in a general election against a Republican lineup that includes Cornyn, whom she views as a formidable opponent. “I don't think that there's a Democrat that can take out Cornyn,” she stated candidly, acknowledging the uphill battle she faces in potentially unseating the incumbent.
Should Crockett decide to run, she will be joining a crowded field that includes state Representative James Talarico and former Representative Colin Allred, with former Representatives Beto O’Rourke and Joaquin Castro also hinting at possible candidacies. This race is critical for Democrats hoping to reclaim control of the Senate.
Crockett’s envisioned political brand is one of vehement advocacy for marginalized groups, rather than aggression towards them. “We don't necessarily need all this machismo directed at some of the most vulnerable people. What we need is people that are going to be strong and fight for the most vulnerable amongst us,” she explained. Her goal is to champion the American dream, fighting tirelessly for those who are most in need.
As Crockett continues her deliberations and strategic preparations, her potential candidacy could significantly reshape the Democratic primary and set the stage for an intense electoral battle in Texas.
