President Donald Trump issued a critical appraisal of Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene during a press conference on Monday, signaling a rift between the former allies as Greene adopts increasingly divergent views from Republican party strategies.
"I don't know what happened to Marjorie," Trump expressed to the gathered media in the Oval Office. "Nice woman. But I don't know what happened, she's lost her way, I think." This statement follows Greene's outspoken criticism during the recent government shutdown, where she condemned Republican leadership for neglecting healthcare issues, highlighting the party's failure to counter Democrats' efforts to extend subsidies under the Affordable Care Act.
Greene, a three-term lawmaker from Georgia, has been vocal on social media, pushing for the White House to prioritize domestic policy over foreign engagements. Her comments came on the heels of President Trump's meeting with Syrian leader Ahmed Al-Sharaa, aimed at bolstering Middle East diplomacy nearly a year after Al-Sharaa's regime overthrew Bashar Assad.
Responding to Greene's critiques, Trump defended his administration's focus on international diplomacy. "I have to view the presidency as a worldwide situation, not locally," he stated, emphasizing the importance of global stability over isolated domestic policy meetings.
The congresswoman has also been at the forefront of calls for transparency regarding the Jeffrey Epstein case files, joining other Republicans in a discharge petition to compel a congressional vote on their release. Moreover, her recent comments criticizing Israel's actions in Gaza as "genocide" marked a significant departure from typical Republican views, drawing further ire from Trump. He accused her of "now catering to the other side," underscoring a perceived shift in her allegiance.
“When somebody like Marjorie goes over and starts making statements like that, it shows she doesn't know,” Trump added, punctuating his disappointment in Greene's recent political maneuvers.
As of the time of reporting, Representative Greene's office had not responded to requests for comment on the president's remarks.
