Jack Schlossberg has officially thrown his hat into the ring for a coveted New York City House seat, maintaining the storied Kennedy family's political lineage. Schlossberg, a Democrat and grandson to former President John F. Kennedy, is no stranger to the public eye, having nurtured a robust following on social media and serving as a political correspondent for Vogue.
With the announcement of Rep. Jerry Nadler's retirement, the race for New York’s deeply Democratic 12th district is heating up. Nadler, a longstanding figure in Congress, has been a prominent voice in New York politics, leaving big shoes to fill. Schlossberg’s entry was anticipated by political insiders following reports by POLITICO last week that he planned to campaign.
In a video released to his followers, Schlossberg articulated his vision for the campaign, emphasizing a collaborative approach to governance. “I’m not running because I have all the answers to our problems,” he stated. “I’m running because the people of New York 12 do. I want to listen to your struggles, hear your stories, amplify your voice, go to Washington and execute on your behalf.”
Schlossberg also painted his campaign as pivotal in the broader Democratic strategy against former President Donald Trump’s political influence and the specter of his potential third term ambitions. “We deserve better, and we can do better, and it starts with the Democratic Party winning back control of the House of Representatives,” he declared.
Though Trump has hinted at another presidential run in 2028 and has been actively promoting campaign merchandise, he conceded last October that a third term would be unconstitutional. Nevertheless, the former president's political maneuvers remain a central talking point in Democratic circles.
Despite Schlossberg’s social media prowess and significant online following, he faces stiff competition in the Democratic primary, notably from New York Assemblymember Micah Lasher. Lasher, considered by many as Nadler's political protégé and the frontrunner, has substantial backing within New York’s political establishment.
As the race unfolds, Schlossberg will need to leverage both his family’s storied political legacy and his modern-day influencer status to resonate with a diverse electorate. His campaign promises to be a test of traditional political clout versus new media influence, setting the stage for an intriguing electoral showdown in New York’s 12th district.
