In a firm stance during a CNN interview on "The Situation Room," Virgin Islands Delegate Stacey Plaskett held her ground regarding her previous communications with Jeffrey Epstein. The controversy surfaced during a 2019 House Oversight Committee hearing, where Plaskett was questioning Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump’s former attorney.
Plaskett, a Democrat, admitted to initiating contact with Epstein on the crucial day she was slated to interrogate Cohen. Despite the backlash following the release of their text exchanges from Epstein's estate, she expressed no regret, stating, "I believe that Jeffrey Epstein had information, and I was going to get information to get at the truth. I’m moving forward, and I think that that’s what we as American people should do."
The documents, which came to light recently, have sparked scrutiny and debate over Plaskett's judgment in utilizing Epstein as a source. She defended her actions by emphasizing her role as a prosecutor, where she often had to interact with less savory characters to gather necessary information. "Lots of people were texting me. Lots of people were giving me information," Plaskett remarked, justifying her interactions with Epstein, who she considered a constituent.
During the 2019 hearing, a critical moment arose when Epstein texted Plaskett about Rhona Graff, a former Trump executive assistant, describing her as "RONA - keeper of the secrets." This tip led Plaskett to question Cohen about Graff, who he indicated was "involved in a lot that went on."
Despite the controversy, Plaskett narrowly escaped a censure vote in the House, with a close 209-214 vote sparing her from formal reprimand and maintaining her position on the House Intelligence Committee.
Adding to the unfolding drama, both the House and Senate have passed a bill mandating the Justice Department to release more information regarding the federal case against Epstein. The bill now awaits President Trump's signature.
As the political and legal implications continue to unfold, Plaskett's steadfast approach raises questions about the boundaries of seeking information and the ethical considerations that come with it. The delegate's future and the impact of her decisions remain focal points of discussion as the community and her colleagues watch closely.
