In a remarkable display of intraparty conflict, Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) has taken significant action against her own party member, Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.), by pushing forward a measure to censure him and strip him of his committee assignments. This development unfolded on the House floor Wednesday afternoon, marking a rare and bold move within the GOP ranks.
The resolution presented by Rep. Mace aims to hold Rep. Mills accountable for alleged ethical violations, proposing his removal from influential roles on the Armed Services and Foreign Affairs committees. A vote on the censure was expected to take place as early as Wednesday evening, with the Republican leadership anticipated to attempt to defer the matter.
This internal strife comes in the wake of a contentious day in Congress, where Democrats had previously threatened to propel their own censure measure against Mills in response to a GOP-led initiative targeting Del. Stacey Plaskett (D-V.I.). However, Democrats retracted their threat following the Republicans’ unsuccessful bid to remove Plaskett from the House Intelligence Committee after it was revealed she had communicated with the late Jeffrey Epstein during a 2019 hearing.
The sequence of these events has sparked allegations of a possible undisclosed agreement between the two major parties aimed at easing growing tensions. When questioned about such a deal, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries opted not to comment directly but reiterated the Democrats' readiness to continue challenging Republican members through similar resolutions. "Democrats are not going to unilaterally disarm, and there's a long list of Republicans worthy of censure," Jeffries stated, highlighting the strained atmosphere in the House.
Amid these developments, Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.), who was among the three Republicans to side with all Democrats against the Plaskett censure resolution, revealed that he faced pressure from fellow Republicans to support the motion but chose to stand by his decision without consulting the party leadership.
As the political drama continues to unfold, responses from key figures such as Speaker Mike Johnson and Rep. Mills remain pending, leaving observers and constituents awaiting further developments in what appears to be an increasingly fractured political landscape.
