In a series of fiery posts on Truth Social, President Donald Trump has called for the arrest and trial of six Democratic lawmakers following their video appeal to U.S. service members and intelligence community professionals. The video urged personnel to disobey orders they believe to be illegal, sparking a vehement response from the President.
“It’s called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL,” Trump declared online. He went on to demand severe actions against the lawmakers: “Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL. Their words cannot be allowed to stand - We won’t have a Country anymore!!! An example MUST BE SET.”
The controversy centers on a video featuring Senators Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) and Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), along with Representatives Jason Crow (D-Colo.), Chrissy Houlahan (D-Penn.), Maggie Goodlander (D-N.H.), and Chris Deluzio (D-Penn.). All participants are either military veterans or have held national security-focused roles prior to their congressional service.
In their message, the lawmakers highlighted the pressures faced by military and intelligence personnel under the current administration, stating, “Americans trust their military. But that trust is at risk. This administration is pitting our uniformed military and intelligence community professionals against American citizens. Like us, you all swore an oath to protect and defend this Constitution. Right now, the threats to our constitution aren’t just coming from abroad, but from right here at home. Our laws are clear, you can refuse illegal orders.”
This comes amidst Trump's controversial decision to federalize National Guard troops in major U.S. cities such as Washington, Chicago, and Portland. This move, purportedly aimed at curbing street crime and increasing deportations, has been criticized by Democratic officials as an overreach of federal authority, leading to multiple lawsuits.
Trump's aggressive response to the lawmakers' video included reposting messages from other users, with one suggesting that the Democrats should be treated as George Washington would have treated traitors—implying severe punishment.
The situation has escalated tensions between the White House and Democrats, particularly those with military and intelligence backgrounds who have expressed concerns about constitutional violations and the potential misuse of military power against U.S. citizens.
As of now, none of the targeted Democrats have publicly responded to Trump’s threats. However, the President continued to express his discontent, emphasizing the danger he believes the video poses to the nation: “This is really bad, and Dangerous to our Country,” he reiterated on Truth Social. “Their words cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???”
The unfolding scenario raises profound questions about the limits of military obedience, the scope of executive power, and the foundational principles of constitutional governance in the United States.
