In a significant shift within Texas politics, former Representative Colin Allred announced on Monday his decision to withdraw from the Texas Senate race, setting his sights instead on a congressional seat currently held by Rep. Julie Johnson. This strategic pivot comes as Jasmine Crockett, another prominent Democrat, gears up to likely throw her hat into the ring for the same Senate seat.
Allred, who previously contended for the Senate against Republican Sen. Ted Cruz in 2024, has opted not to engage in what promises to be a competitive Democratic primary. The primary already features state Rep. James Talarico, and with Crockett's expected entry, the battle would only intensify. Allred cited lagging fundraising efforts compared to his primary competitors as part of his rationale for shifting focus.
The decision to run for Congress in the newly redrawn 33rd Congressional District was influenced by recent Supreme Court approval of a new Texas map favorable to GOP candidates. This move also aligns with the deadline for filing candidacy for the March primaries, highlighting the tactical timing of Allred's announcement.
Allred expressed his concerns about a divisive Democratic primary potentially weakening the party’s position in the crucial upcoming election. "In the past few days, I’ve come to believe that a bruising Senate Democratic primary and runoff would prevent the Democratic Party from going into this critical election unified," he stated. His decision aims at consolidating Democratic efforts to present a united front against the Republican nominees, who are currently embroiled in their own contentious primary involving incumbent Sen. John Cornyn, Attorney General Ken Paxton, and Rep. Wesley Hunt.
Democrats are currently poised to attempt regaining control of the Senate, needing to net four seats — a goal they believe is within reach following their recent electoral successes across the nation. Allred’s strategic withdrawal from the Senate race and subsequent congressional campaign underscore the high stakes and calculated maneuvers defining Texas’s political landscape as the election season intensifies.
