Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett Announces U.S. Senate Bid, Shaking Up Democratic Primary

Texas Representative Jasmine Crockett is set to announce her candidacy for the U.S. Senate on Monday, intensifying the dynamics within the Democratic primary as the party aims to turn Texas blue and reclaim dominance in the Senate. Crockett, serving her second term and hailing from Dallas, is entering the race against fellow Democrat, state Rep. James Talarico, a recognized up-and-comer in the party. Despite the challenging odds indicated by polls, Democrats are hopeful about securing a statewide victory for the first time in years, inspired by the anti-Trump sentiment that contributed to their recent off-cycle election successes.

In a strategic move, former Representative Colin Allred withdrew from the race just hours before Crockett’s announcement, citing the potential for a divisive primary and the probability of a runoff if no candidate secures a majority in the March 3 primary. Allred's decision marks his second withdrawal from a Senate race after a defeat by Senator Ted Cruz in 2024.

Crockett has been contemplating her Senate run, voicing that she would only proceed if polling demonstrated a feasible path to victory. Known for her robust fundraising abilities, Crockett has amassed over $6.5 million this year alone, drawing significantly from small-dollar donors. Her assertive approach and some controversial remarks, such as her comment about Texas Governor Greg Abbott, have not gone unnoticed.

Her bid for the Senate is causing a reshuffle in House positions due to new district boundaries set by Texas Republicans. This move alleviates a potentially challenging primary for her current seat, while pushing Allred into another contentious race against Rep. Julie Johnson.

On the Republican front, Senator John Cornyn faces his challenges, with a crowded primary that includes Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Representative Wesley Hunt. Cornyn’s alignment with MAGA values has been questioned, leaving room for Democrats to capitalize on a potential GOP division.

Crockett’s strategy involves targeting a split within the Republican ranks, particularly hoping for Paxton, who is seen as a more vulnerable opponent, to emerge from the primary. She revealed to the Dallas Morning News her commissioned polling results indicating her possible victory, a claim that has stirred discussions within Democratic circles.

As the race heats up, Democrats are closely watching this primary, seeing it as a critical opportunity to flip a key Senate seat and make significant inroads in Texas politics.
