Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has thrown his support behind Bob Brooks, a prominent firefighter union leader, in the Democratic primary for the state's pivotal 7th Congressional District. This endorsement marks a significant move by Shapiro, a potential 2028 presidential candidate, to influence a primary that could play a critical role in the Democrats' strategy to regain control of the House.
The governor's backing of Brooks was announced ahead of a major fundraising event in Philadelphia, signaling Shapiro's intent to leverage his political influence to flip key Pennsylvania districts from red to blue. Such efforts are not only aimed at the 2026 midterm elections, where Shapiro will seek re-election, but could also bolster his credentials for a possible White House run in 2028.
Brooks is vying for a seat currently held by GOP Rep. Ryan Mackenzie, who narrowly secured the district last year, making it a prime target for Democrats. Shapiro's endorsement comes as part of a broader initiative to reshape the Pennsylvania Democratic Party and propel its candidates to victory across several vulnerable districts.
"Bob Brooks is exactly the kind of fighter the Lehigh Valley needs in Washington," Shapiro stated. "His dedication to the causes of organized labor and his track record of advocating for better wages, healthcare, and safety make him the best choice for this district."
Brooks expressed gratitude for the endorsement, highlighting it as a "powerful vote of confidence." His early support of Shapiro during the 2022 gubernatorial race appears to have cemented a strong alliance between the two, with Brooks emphasizing their shared commitment to Pennsylvania's working families.
Despite Shapiro’s influential endorsement, the primary remains competitive. Brooks faces stiff opposition from other Democrats, including Ryan Crosswell, who currently leads in fundraising. Moreover, the governor's endorsement has not unified the various Democratic factions, which remain divided.
In addition to backing Brooks, Shapiro has endorsed other Democratic candidates in key races across the state, such as Janelle Stelson in the 10th District and is expected to support more candidates in the coming months. This strategy underscores Shapiro's comprehensive approach to strengthen his party's standing at both state and national levels.
Brooks' campaign also enjoys support from both moderate and progressive figures within the Democratic Party, including endorsements from Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Ro Khanna, illustrating his broad appeal across the party spectrum. This wide-ranging support could be pivotal as Brooks and his supporters gear up for what promises to be a fiercely contested primary season.
