Wyoming GOP Representative Harriet Hageman declared on Tuesday her intention to run for the U.S. Senate, aiming to fill the vacancy left by retiring Senator Cynthia Lummis. Hageman, a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump, is no stranger to political battles, having previously ousted Liz Cheney, a prominent Trump critic, in the 2022 GOP primary with Trump's endorsement.
In her campaign launch video, Hageman expressed her vision for America's future, emphasizing the need to preserve cultural values while pushing forward the advancements of the previous century. "This fight is about making sure the next century sees the advancements of the last, while protecting our culture and our way of life,” she stated. “We must dedicate ourselves to ensuring that the next 100 years is the next great American century."
Senator Lummis, who recently announced her decision not to seek reelection, described her experience in Congress as feeling like a "sprinter in a marathon." Her departure has opened the door for Hageman, who had been contemplating a gubernatorial run but appears to have set her sights on the Senate.
During her time in the House, Hageman has been a vocal supporter of Trump's policies, particularly those related to border security and immigration. “I worked with President Trump to pass 46 billion in additional funding for border security, while ensuring that Wyomingites do not pay the cost of new immigration," she said in her announcement.
Despite her strong reelection performance, where she won by nearly 48 points, Hageman faced criticism from constituents earlier this year over her stance on federal budget cuts and Social Security during a notably rowdy town hall.
As the campaign gears up, Hageman's alignment with Trump's policies and her promise to keep Wyoming a leader in energy and food production might resonate well with the state's conservative base. Trump's overwhelming victory in Wyoming by nearly 46 points in the last election suggests that his endorsement could be a significant advantage for Hageman in her Senate bid.
With the election on the horizon, Wyoming voters are poised to decide whether Hageman's track record and vision for America align with their expectations for their next senator.
