In a rare moment of unity, the U.S. Senate has unanimously passed a resolution to install a plaque commemorating the bravery of law enforcement officers during the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot. This decision comes after prolonged legislative delays and political disagreements that have hindered the plaque’s installation.
Originally mandated by Congress in March 2022, the plaque's installation faced obstacles due to differing interpretations of the law. Speaker Mike Johnson previously stated that the project was "not implementable," while the Justice Department argued that the existing plaque did not meet legal requirements because it listed departments instead of individual officers.
The resolution, spearheaded by Senators Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) and Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), aims to resolve these disputes and ensure that the officers' actions are duly recognized. “On January 6, 2021, courageous law enforcement officers from the United States Capitol Police and other agencies risked their lives to defend the United States Capitol and protect Members of Congress and their staff,” Senator Tillis remarked. He emphasized the importance of prominently displaying the plaque in the Senate to honor the officers' heroism and sacrifice.
Though a timeline for the installation has not been provided, the plaque will temporarily be placed in the Senate. A permanent location on the west front of the Capitol will be identified later. Notably, the resolution bypassed the need for House approval, streamlining the process.
This development occurred shortly after the fifth anniversary of the Capitol attack, a period still marked by significant political tension. The White House recently launched a website to counter misinformation about the riot, and debates continue over the actions of former President Donald Trump, who in his second term pardoned participants of the riot, including those convicted of violent offenses.
The unanimous Senate vote represents a significant bipartisan effort to acknowledge and remember the bravery shown by law enforcement on that tumultuous day, despite the ongoing political strife that surrounds the events of January 6th.
