Congressional Black Caucus Backs Espaillat, Signaling Shift in Political Dynamics

NEW YORK — In a notable shift in its political alliances, the Congressional Black Caucus' political arm has endorsed Rep. Adriano Espaillat, a candidate who, a decade ago, faced rejection from the same group. This endorsement comes as Espaillat faces a challenging primary against Darializa Avila Chevalier, a 32-year-old democratic socialist and Afro-Latina.

Espaillat, who represents Upper Manhattan and parts of the Bronx, is no stranger to controversy within the Caucus. His previous bids to unseat Rep. Charles Rangel, a CBC founding member, in 2012 and 2014, and his subsequent attempt to join the CBC in 2017 were met with resistance. Despite these hurdles, Espaillat, who also chairs the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, has now received the CBC's backing against Avila Chevalier, who has gained support from progressive groups like the city’s DSA chapter and the Justice Democrats.

The endorsement marks a significant reconciliation, considering Espaillat's complex history with the CBC. When Rangel retired, Espaillat's third run for the seat saw him once again at odds with the CBC, which had endorsed Rangel's preferred successor, Keith Wright. Despite the opposition, Espaillat won, leading to ongoing political rivalry in New York.

CBC PAC Chair, Rep. Gregory Meeks, highlighted Espaillat's dedication to economic justice and civil rights, particularly noting his efforts in making New York City more affordable. "Congressman Adriano Espaillat reflects the kind of leadership that our caucus and its members have long championed," Meeks stated.

In response to the endorsement, Espaillat expressed his gratitude, emphasizing the significance of the CBC's support in his career. "The CBC has long stood at the forefront of the fight for economic opportunity and social justice for Black and other marginalized communities," said Espaillat. "As the first formerly undocumented person to serve in Congress, this endorsement carries special meaning for me."

This endorsement underscores a pivotal moment in New York politics as Espaillat's campaign could set the tone for future interactions between different ethnic and political factions within the Democratic Party. As the primary election approaches, all eyes will be on how this endorsement influences the political landscape and whether Espaillat's renewed relationship with the CBC will resonate with voters in his district.
