In a charged session of the House Judiciary Committee, Chair Jim Jordan launched a fervent critique against former special counsel Jack Smith, portraying him as a key figure in what he described as a prolonged Democratic effort to misuse law enforcement against ex-President Donald Trump.
During his opening statement on Thursday, the Ohio Republican voiced his longstanding grievances against various officials involved in legal actions against Trump. Notable mentions included Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, former FBI Director James Comey, and Thomas Windom, a former deputy to Smith. Jordan's censure reached a peak as he announced he had referred Windom to the Justice Department for criminal prosecution due to non-cooperation with the committee’s investigative pursuits.
“We should never forget what took place, what they did to the guy ‘We the People’ elected president twice,” Jordan declared, asserting that the public had seen through the alleged misuse of power. “The good news is, the American people saw through it.”
Jordan, known for his theatrical political style and close alliance with Trump, argued that Smith was determined to undermine Trump’s potential re-election in 2024. Despite this, Smith has maintained that his investigations into Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election results and his handling of classified documents were conducted impartially, a stance he has held firm on regardless of the president’s party affiliation. Smith has indeed served under both Democratic and Republican administrations.
Throughout Jordan’s fiery discourse, Smith remained composed, occasionally sipping water but otherwise stoic.
In response, Democrat Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland defended Smith’s integrity and professionalism in handling the investigations. He highlighted that Trump's criticisms and calls for imprisonment of Smith were not based on any misconduct, but rather on Smith’s adherence to his duty.
“Not because you did anything wrong, mind you, but because you did everything right,” Raskin pointed out. “You had the audacity to do your job.”
The session underscored the deep-seated political divisions regarding the investigations of former President Trump, with each side steadfast in their interpretation of justice and the rule of law. As debates continue, the nation remains closely tuned to the unfolding political drama that these investigations entail.
