Tina Smith Backs Peggy Flanagan in Spirited Minnesota Senate Race

In a striking turn of events in Minnesota's Democratic Senate primary, Senator Tina Smith has thrown her support behind Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan, opting for a progressive candidate over the more moderate Representative Angie Craig. This endorsement, crucially timed just ahead of the state's precinct caucuses, could be a game-changer in what has become an increasingly fierce contest.

Senator Smith announced her endorsement through a video posted on YouTube, which she shared first with POLITICO. Amid heightened immigration enforcement actions by the Trump administration, which Smith described as "terrorizing our communities," she expressed unequivocal trust in Flanagan's leadership. "I know that right now there is no one that I trust more to stand with Minnesota than Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan," Smith stated.

Flanagan, visibly honored in the video, vowed to carry forward Smith's legacy. "We’re going to push back against the status quo and send a progressive fighter to continue representing us in Washington, D.C.," she asserted.

Smith's endorsement adds significant weight to Flanagan's campaign, aligning her with other progressive leaders. The lieutenant governor has already garnered support from prominent figures like Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, as well as former Senator Al Franken. This influential group, sometimes referred to as the Fight Club of progressive senators, sees Flanagan as a continuation of their values and policies at the national level.

On the other side, Angie Craig holds substantial endorsements as well, including those from Senators Ruben Gallego and Tammy Baldwin, along with notable figures like former Speaker Nancy Pelosi and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

The race has also been shaped by recent violent incidents involving federal agents, which have intensified the political discourse around immigration policies. Both candidates have advocated for the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, though they have clashed on their respective stances in the past, with Flanagan criticizing Craig’s previous "pro-Trump" immigration votes.

Polls show a mixed picture, with some indicating a strong lead for Flanagan, while others suggest a tighter race, particularly highlighting Craig's robust fundraising efforts which have given her a significant financial edge.

As the caucuses approach, Minnesota's Democratic voters face a critical decision between a progressive advocate in Flanagan and a moderate voice in Craig, setting the stage for what promises to be a highly consequential primary outcome.
