Representatives Ro Khanna and Thomas Massie are pressing the Justice Department to disclose previously redacted names of individuals linked to Jeffrey Epstein, the notorious sex offender. The lawmakers argue that these redactions may exceed legal allowances, despite recent legislation aimed at increasing transparency in the Epstein case.
Speaking outside the Justice Department on Monday, Massie, a Republican from Kentucky, hinted at the possibility of revealing these names himself under the legal protection afforded in congressional settings. He suggested that the identities might be disclosed during a floor speech or committee hearing soon, emphasizing the urgency of exposing those involved in Epstein’s crimes.
The duo's investigation stems from a bipartisan effort to ensure the Epstein files held by the DOJ are fully public. Massie noted that among the undisclosed names, there is at least one U.S. citizen and a foreign national, raising questions about the reasons behind their anonymity.
“There are six men, some with photos, whose identities have been unjustly concealed,” Khanna, a Democrat from California, expressed his concerns to the press. The lawmakers had the opportunity to view these unredacted files at a DOJ office, although Massie reported difficulties accessing certain documents.
Earlier on the same day, Rep. Jamie Raskin, a senior Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, also reviewed the unredacted materials. He criticized the extensive redactions, which he said were shielding not just victims but potential co-conspirators or enablers from public scrutiny.
Raskin highlighted the redaction of names like Les Wexner, a known associate of Epstein and former CEO of Victoria’s Secret, whose involvement remains under congressional investigation. He also noted a peculiar redaction related to Donald Trump, pointing out the unnecessary secrecy surrounding a note from Epstein’s legal team that referenced Trump.
The lawmakers continue to push for complete transparency, arguing that shielding the identities of those involved only perpetuates injustice. As the political and legal drama unfolds, the possibility of revealing these names looms large, potentially implicating more high-profile individuals in the scandal.
