First Republican Clash: Rep. Massie Confronts AG Bondi Over Epstein Case Redactions

In a notable deviation from party lines, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie engaged in a heated exchange with Attorney General Pam Bondi during Wednesday's House Judiciary Committee hearing, marking a distinctive moment in the ongoing scrutiny of the Jeffrey Epstein case files.

The controversy centered on the redactions in the Epstein files, particularly concerning the shielding of victim identities versus the anonymization of prominent figures like businessman Les Wexner. Massie, who played a pivotal role in pushing through legislation last year aimed at enhancing transparency in such documents, challenged Bondi on the legal compliance of these redactions.

“Who’s responsible for this massive failure that led to the release of victims' names?” Massie pressed, seeking accountability. Bondi’s response was swift, branding Massie a “failed politician” and “hypocrite,” although she admitted that Wexner's name was reinstated into the documents just 40 minutes after the oversight was caught.

Massie retorted, “Within 40 minutes of me catching you red-handed," emphasizing the timing of the correction. The exchange intensified as Bondi accused Massie of suffering from “Trump derangement syndrome” and neglecting to pursue justice for Epstein's victims in past administrations.

“This is bigger than Watergate,” Massie asserted, implicating the current administration in a decades-spanning cover-up. He suggested that Bondi’s management of the Epstein case files was part of this broader conspiracy.

On the other side, Wexner, who has publicly stated his disassociation from Epstein following the latter's earlier investigations, was mentioned in a statement by his legal representative. According to the statement, in 2019, Wexner was approached by an Assistant U.S. Attorney not as a target but as a potential source of information on Epstein. "Mr. Wexner cooperated fully by providing background information on Epstein and was never contacted again,” the representative clarified.

This clash in the judiciary hearing highlights ongoing tensions and the complex interplay of politics, law, and the pursuit of justice in high-profile cases involving influential figures. As investigations continue, the implications of these discussions are likely to resonate well beyond the confines of the committee room.
