In a move that could reshape the future of the Senate GOP's campaign strategies, Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno is reportedly considering a bid to lead the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) for the 2028 election cycle. This information comes from two Republican senators, who spoke on condition of anonymity about the private discussions.
While Senator Moreno has not formally announced his candidacy for the chairmanship, his potential interest has sparked conversations and garnered support within the Senate GOP caucus. A spokesperson for Moreno has currently declined to comment on the matter.
Senator Jim Banks of Indiana, a notable supporter of Moreno, praised his work ethic and fundraising prowess. "He's a machine. He is always working. He’s an incredible fundraiser," Banks stated, highlighting the qualities that make Moreno a strong candidate for NRSC chair.
Moreover, other GOP senators have hinted that Moreno could likely secure the position if he decides to pursue it, noting that typically there isn't much competition for the top campaign role. However, rumors of other possible candidates, such as Nebraska Senator Pete Ricketts, have surfaced, suggesting that Moreno might face some opposition.
Senator Moreno, though relatively new to the Senate with just over a year of service, has rapidly taken on significant roles within the GOP conference. He has been one of the lead negotiators in recent healthcare reform talks and has built a substantial network of relationships beneficial for the NRSC role. His connections extend deep within the Senate, to the White House, and notably with former President Donald Trump.
His fundraising capabilities were particularly showcased during his expensive 2024 campaign against Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown, and he has since been a prolific fundraiser for the NRSC, currently chaired by Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina.
Senior Republicans, including Majority Leader John Thune, have praised Moreno's ambition and intelligence, further boosting his standing among his colleagues.
As the 2028 election cycle approaches, the leadership of the NRSC will be crucial in shaping the party's efforts to secure and maintain Senate seats. Bernie Moreno's potential candidacy represents a significant development in the strategic positioning of the GOP, signaling a possible new direction under his leadership if he chooses to run and is ultimately selected.
