House Speaker Mike Johnson to Join Far-Right Global Leaders at Turning Point Conference

Turning Point Action, an influential political organization, is preparing to host a significant gathering titled the Alliance of Sovereign Nations from March 4 to 6 in Washington. This event will feature prominent figures from both U.S. politics and far-right parties globally, highlighting an unusual alignment on the political spectrum.

Among the key attendees announced are House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.), and international figures such as Markus Frohnmaier of Germany’s Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), George Simion of the Romanian Alliance for the Union of Romanians, along with European Parliament members Barbara Bonte from Belgium's Vlaams Belang and Petra Steger from Austria’s Freiheitliche Partei (FPÖ).

The conference, driven by Rep. Luna’s initiative, aims to discuss and promote national sovereignty and the prioritization of individual country interests. Tyler Bowyer, COO of Turning Point Action, emphasized the importance of a platform for 'center-right' leaders globally to share their perspectives, especially given the current political climate in countries like Germany.

Germany's AfD has been under scrutiny, with parts of the party being briefly classified as "right-wing extremist" by Germany’s Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, a decision currently stalled by legal appeals. The U.S. has seen mixed reactions, with figures like Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance defending the AfD against these allegations, highlighting a contentious divide on the perception of far-right politics.

The event’s agenda appears to position itself as a counter to more globally recognized assemblies like the Davos Forum, focusing instead on a nationalist approach to international issues. This gathering is not without controversy, as it follows a series of engagements between U.S. officials and AfD members, who have been increasingly active in international politics despite facing significant opposition at home.

In a world where political alliances are continually evolving, the Alliance of Sovereign Nations conference represents a critical juncture for far-right movements globally, potentially reshaping international dialogues around nationalism and sovereignty. As political landscapes shift, the outcomes of such meetings could have profound implications on global political dynamics and the discourse surrounding democratic values and human rights.
