Former President Bill Clinton, during a recent deposition with the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, took a neutral stance on whether current President Donald Trump should be called to testify in the ongoing Jeffrey Epstein investigation. According to Committee Chair James Comer, Clinton expressed that the decision to subpoena Trump was up to the committee members themselves.
"[He] went on to say that, ‘President Trump has never said anything to me to make me think he was involved and he met with Epstein,'" Comer, a Kentucky Republican, recounted from Clinton’s testimony. Comer highlighted this remark as noteworthy given the widespread speculation about Trump's involvement.
However, the representation of Clinton's testimony was disputed by Rep. Robert Garcia of California, the top Democrat on the Oversight Committee. During a separate news conference, Garcia argued that Comer’s description of Clinton’s statements was not accurate and criticized Republicans for allegedly revealing details of the closed-door session.
Garcia, asserting the need for clarity and transparency in the investigation, called for Trump to be subpoenaed. He refrained from providing specific details but expressed dissatisfaction with the handling of information by his Republican counterparts.
Adding to the Democratic push for further investigation into Trump's past interactions with Epstein, Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.) mentioned that Clinton’s comments raised "new questions" about Trump’s alleged estrangement from Epstein. Trump has previously stated that he had a falling out with Epstein years before Epstein’s 2019 arrest on federal sex trafficking charges and denied any involvement in the criminal activities for which Epstein was accused.
On the other hand, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who also testified before the committee, unequivocally denied ever meeting Epstein or having knowledge of his or Ghislaine Maxwell’s criminal activities. The Clintons have not been accused of any wrongdoing related to Epstein’s case.
The conflicting accounts and the charged atmosphere surrounding the testimonies reflect the complex nature of the Epstein investigation and the high-profile figures it continues to draw in. As the committee deliberates on the potential subpoena of President Trump, the political and public scrutiny surrounding the probe is expected to intensify.
