Commerce Secretary Lutnick to Testify in House Oversight's Epstein Investigation

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has committed to voluntarily testify before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee to discuss the extent of his past relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. This announcement was made by the committee's chair, James Comer, who praised Lutnick's willingness to support the committee's inquiry into the disgraced financier.

"I commend his demonstrated commitment to transparency and appreciate his willingness to engage with the Committee," said Comer, a Kentucky Republican. "I look forward to his testimony." Although the date for Lutnick’s deposition has not been set, his proactive decision to appear alleviates the need for a subpoena, which was being considered as a next step by some members of the committee.

This development comes amid heightened scrutiny over Lutnick's connections with Epstein, which surfaced after the Justice Department released extensive details of their association. Despite not being accused of any wrongdoing linked to Epstein's criminal activities, Lutnick has faced significant pressure from Democrats to resign his post. He initially indicated that he had severed ties with Epstein prior to his 2008 conviction but acknowledged having met with him afterward.

The controversy intensified following recent allegations by Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) during a deposition of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton released by the Oversight Committee. Mace suggested that Lutnick acted as a liaison between Clinton and Epstein for fundraising purposes post-9/11. Clinton, who stated her interactions with Lutnick were solely about response efforts to the 9/11 attacks, denied any recollection of meeting Epstein and has not been implicated in any misconduct.

Lutnick's forthcoming testimony is expected to further clarify his interactions with Epstein and provide insight into the accusations of his acting as a go-between for Clinton and Epstein. The testimony could play a crucial role in either bolstering or alleviating the ongoing pressure on Lutnick concerning his past associations and current role within the administration. As the committee awaits to schedule the deposition, all eyes will be on how this testimony could impact the broader investigation into Epstein's connections with high-profile figures.
