In a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee has called upon Kathryn Ruemmler, former White House counsel under President Barack Obama, to testify regarding her connections with the notorious sex offender. Ruemmler, who is also stepping down as the chief lawyer at Goldman Sachs, has been under intense scrutiny after revelations of her communications with Epstein surfaced.
Ruemmler's impending resignation from Goldman Sachs was announced just as troubling details about her interactions with Epstein came to light through documents released by the Justice Department. These documents include records of phone calls Epstein made to her following his arrest on charges of sex crimes. Oversight Committee Chair James Comer, in a letter to Ruemmler obtained by POLITICO, stated that the released information and documents obtained by the committee led them to believe that Ruemmler could provide valuable insights into the investigation.
The committee has scheduled a transcribed interview with Ruemmler for the morning of April 21, although this date may change. As the story unfolds, Goldman Sachs has refrained from commenting on the matter. Through a spokesperson, Ruemmler expressed regret over her association with Epstein, emphasizing that she has not been charged with any wrongdoing.
This call for testimony is part of a broader series of inquiries into high-profile figures who maintained relationships with Epstein after his 2008 conviction for sex crimes. Notably, Brad Karp, former chair of the law firm Paul Weiss, resigned from his position due to his connections with Epstein, as reported earlier by Politico.
Additionally, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has agreed to speak with the Oversight Committee after DOJ documents showed ongoing communications with Epstein post-conviction. Like Ruemmler, Lutnick has not faced any charges related to these revelations.
The Epstein scandal continues to reveal its extensive network, touching some of the most influential figures in U.S. politics and business. As the investigation proceeds, the Oversight Committee is determined to uncover the full extent of Epstein's connections and hold accountable those who enabled or benefited from his criminal activities.
