Texas AG Race Heats Up: Rep. Chip Roy Faces Runoff Against Sen. Mayes Middleton

In a dramatic twist in Texas politics, Rep. Chip Roy is set to face a runoff in the fiercely contested race to become the next Texas Attorney General, following the incumbent Ken Paxton. The primary race, which has turned into a remarkable test of loyalty to former President Donald Trump, sees Roy going head-to-head with state Senator Mayes Middleton, who currently leads with a significant margin.

As the votes poured in, Middleton emerged on top, leading Roy by double digits after three-fifths of the votes were counted. This primary has been especially notable for its focus on allegiance to Trump. Both Middleton and another candidate, Reitz, have criticized Roy for his past decisions to break away from Trump and his calls for Paxton's resignation amidst charges of bribery and abuse. They, in contrast, have been vocal about their support for Trump’s MAGA agenda.

Despite the high stakes and the clear divisions among candidates regarding Trump, the former president has not placed his endorsement on any candidate in this race. This has left the political landscape somewhat uncertain, with potentials for shifting alliances as the runoff approaches.

Rep. Chip Roy, who has served Texas' 21st congressional district since 2019 and holds the position of policy chair in the House Freedom Caucus, is known for his staunch conservative principles. He has shown strong performance in both polling and fundraising, backed by endorsements from key figures such as Senator Ted Cruz and other members of the Freedom Caucus.

However, Middleton’s lead in the primary suggests he might be entering the runoff with an advantage. With a background of favoring strict conservative policies and a strong pro-Trump stance, Middleton has appealed to a significant portion of the Republican base. The looming question now is whether Trump, who has previously expressed dissatisfaction with Roy, will intervene in the runoff.

As the race progresses, all eyes will be on this high-profile contest not just for its immediate political implications, but also for its broader impact on the future of Republican politics in Texas. The runoff will undoubtedly be a decisive moment, potentially reshaping the political landscape in this key battleground state.
