Texas Congressman Tony Gonzales Acknowledges Affair with Late Staffer Amid Ethical Investigation

Texas Representative Tony Gonzales has publicly admitted to having a sexual relationship with a former staff member, Regina Santos-Aviles, who tragically took her own life last year. This admission comes at a critical juncture as Gonzales faces a challenging runoff in the Republican primary for his congressional seat.

In a recent radio interview, Gonzales stated, "I made a mistake, and I had a lapse in judgment, and there was a lack of faith, and I take full responsibility for those actions." The conversation with radio host Joe Pagliarulo surfaced just hours after congressional investigators suggested that the House Ethics Committee should investigate the relationship, which could contravene House rules.

The relationship and subsequent events have stirred controversy and led to calls from several Republican colleagues for Gonzales' resignation, especially after new details emerged in the lead-up to the primary elections. Previously, Gonzales had denied the allegations and refused to step down.

Adding to the scandal are allegations, supported by published text messages, that Gonzales coerced Santos-Aviles into sending explicit photos. These claims, which have been widely circulated in the media, have not been independently verified by all outlets.

Gonzales, who is married, spoke candidly about Santos-Aviles' tenure in his office prior to her death, describing her as a thriving member of his team, contrary to some reports suggesting otherwise. He emphasized, "Some of the reports are saying that she was not thriving at work. It’s exact opposite. She was thriving at work."

Addressing the tragic end of Santos-Aviles, who died by setting herself on fire at her home in 2025, Gonzales firmly stated that her suicide had "absolutely nothing to do with" their relationship. This statement has sparked debates about the pressures and personal struggles faced by those in the political sphere.

As the House Ethics Committee gears up to investigate, Gonzales has vowed to cooperate fully. The outcome of this investigation could significantly impact his political career, particularly as he approaches a runoff election against Brandon Herrera, a media personality and gun business owner known as “the AK Guy.”

This unfolding story continues to develop, raising questions about personal conduct, responsibility, and the intertwining of private and public lives in the realm of politics.
