Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is stepping into Maryland's political arena, endorsing former Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn in the race to succeed retiring Rep. Steny Hoyer. This move marks a significant divergence from Hoyer's choice, signaling a potential final showdown between the two Democratic leaders.
On Wednesday, Pelosi publicly praised Dunn for his bravery during the January 6 Capitol riot, highlighting his leadership qualities in the face of adversity. "My friend Harry Dunn is a true American hero and exactly the right person to represent Maryland in Congress," Pelosi declared. She commended his defense against what she termed "Donald Trump’s violent MAGA mob" and his ongoing commitment to safeguarding American democracy.
This endorsement is not Pelosi’s first show of support for Dunn; she previously backed his unsuccessful 2024 congressional bid. The California lawmaker's decision contrasts sharply with Hoyer's preference for his former political aide, state Del. Adrian Boafo, who is also vying for the soon-to-be-vacant seat.
Dunn, who gained national attention for his poignant testimony about the Capitol riot's horrors, entered the race shortly after Hoyer announced his endorsement of Boafo. Despite a silent response from Hoyer's camp regarding Pelosi's endorsement, the rivalry between the two political heavyweights is palpable, reminiscent of their past battles and collaborations in Congress.
In a recent interview, Dunn expressed his admiration for Pelosi, equating her support to a significant endorsement of his mission to uphold democracy. "Anytime that somebody with the stature and political history [of] Nancy Pelosi puts their support behind me, it’s just like ‘wow,’” Dunn stated. He believes Pelosi’s backing will resonate well with voters aware of her long-standing role as a Democratic stalwart.
Despite a failed attempt to secure a congressional seat in Maryland’s 3rd District last year, Dunn has not been deterred. His campaign for Hoyer’s 5th District seat kicked off with impressive fundraising, collecting $1 million in just eight days. Dunn, currently residing outside the district, plans to relocate to the 5th District, his birthplace, should he win the primary. With a crowded field of candidates, the Democratic primary winner is anticipated to be the favorite in November’s general election.
Pelosi and Dunn share a personal bond forged in the aftermath of January 6, with Pelosi hosting annual lunches with Dunn and other officers affected by the riot. This relationship underscores a deep mutual respect and a shared commitment to confronting and overcoming the traumatic events they both witnessed and endured.
As Maryland's Democratic primary approaches, the endorsements from two of the party's most influential figures set the stage for an intriguing electoral battle, reflecting not only individual candidate merits but also the enduring legacies of Pelosi and Hoyer within the Democratic Party.
