The family of the late civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson has officially retracted an endorsement that was previously attributed to him for Illinois Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton's Senate campaign. The retraction came after Stratton's team announced on Saturday that she had received backing from both Jesse Jackson, prior to his passing last month, and his son Yusef.

The endorsement was reportedly confirmed during a Women’s History Month event at the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, an organization founded by Jesse Jackson. The Stratton campaign stated that they were informed of the endorsement at the event and were also shown sample ballots endorsing Stratton that were being distributed.

However, on Monday, a twist in the narrative emerged when Yusef Jackson, COO of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, stated that the sample ballot was "released without authorization." He clarified that the organization and the Jackson family would not be making any political endorsements this cycle. Yusef explained that his father had begun the process of evaluating candidates for the primary election but had not finalized his endorsements before his death. "Out of respect for my father, we decided not to publicly release his intended selections given the process had not been finalized," Yusef said in a statement.

This endorsement mix-up has intensified the spotlight on the division among Black Democrats in Illinois, especially between Stratton and Rep. Robin Kelly, as they both vie for the seat of retiring Sen. Dick Durbin. Concerns have been raised within the Democratic Party that the competition between Stratton and Kelly might split the vote, potentially paving the way for Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi to secure the nomination.

Rep. Jonathan Jackson, another son of Jesse Jackson, commented on the situation, emphasizing that his father traditionally avoided engaging in conflicts within the Black community. “He wouldn’t do that. He was always pushing the community forward,” Jonathan remarked, hinting at underlying political strategies with the endorsement announcements.

The retraction and subsequent clarifications have added an unexpected layer of complexity to an already contentious primary race, reflecting the deep-seated strategic maneuverings within political endorsements and their influential power in electoral politics.
