Trump-Backed NC Senate Leader Phil Berger Concedes Defeat by Narrow Margin

In a surprising turn of events, North Carolina Senate leader Phil Berger, who had the backing of former President Donald Trump, conceded defeat in the Republican primary for the Greensboro-area seat, losing by a mere 23 votes. Berger, a dominant figure in state politics, acknowledged his defeat to Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page, following a meticulous recount process.

The initial unofficial results showed Berger trailing Page by just two votes, leading to both a machine recount and a hand recount in select counties, which confirmed the narrow margin. Berger, in his concession, expressed his respect for the electoral decision and his congratulatory wishes to Page. "While this was a close race, the voters have spoken, and I congratulate Sheriff Page on his victory," Berger remarked. He also reflected on his 15-year tenure, noting the significant transformations within the state under Republican leadership.

Sheriff Page, anticipated to win the district in the upcoming November elections, expressed gratitude towards Berger for his service and for a gracious concession. "I appreciate Senator Berger’s call earlier today and his concession. I’m grateful for his years of service to our state, and I thank him for wishing me the best moving forward," Page stated.

This electoral outcome marks a rare setback in Trump's endorsement track record, as his backed candidates have predominantly seen success in this election cycle. Trump had endorsed Berger in December, praising him as an "America First Patriot" and lauding his performance. Interestingly, Trump had also spoken favorably about Page, calling him "great" and describing both candidates as "outstanding people."

Berger's defeat opens up new dynamics in Republican state politics, where he has been a pivotal figure since 2005, steering the party through majorities and significant legislative changes. His efforts have included redrawing congressional maps and attempting to shift control over various state powers.

Page's successful primary challenge was fueled by opposition to a controversial gambling expansion proposal championed by Berger in 2023, which would have allowed a new casino in the district. While the proposal was eventually dropped, it provided Page with a significant platform to launch his campaign against Berger.

As North Carolina politics braces for the upcoming general elections, the implications of this primary result could resonate beyond the borders of the state, influencing Republican strategies and alignments in the broader national context.
