Corey Lewandowski, once a pivotal figure in Donald Trump's 2016 campaign and later an adviser to former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, has officially left his position at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). His departure was confirmed by DHS on Friday, following his notable appearance alongside Noem during her recent trip to Guyana.
Lewandowski's role at DHS has been a source of contention and speculation, particularly during Noem's tenure, which was marked by aggressive immigration enforcement policies. His involvement raised eyebrows, given his status as a "special government employee," a role typically restricted by U.S. law to 130 days of unpaid service per year. However, Lewandowski had been serving since Noem's appointment in February 2025.
The recent images of Lewandowski with Noem in Guyana, released by the U.S. Embassy, came just as Noem was named a special envoy for Western Hemisphere security issues. This fueled further speculation about Lewandowski's future role in government, though Friday's statement from DHS made it clear that his time at the department has ended.
Lewandowski's influence at DHS was substantial, despite his informal status. He held the power to veto any contract exceeding $100,000, among other significant decisions. His departure coincides with heightened scrutiny over DHS's strategies, including a controversial, albeit brief, suspension of the TSA PreCheck program last month—a move perceived as a pressure tactic against Democrats amid ongoing funding disputes.
Adding to the drama, Noem has recently dodged questions regarding her personal and professional relationship with Lewandowski, following reports suggesting a possible affair, which both parties have denied.
Lewandowski's career has been both influential and tumultuous. After leading Trump to a primary victory in New Hampshire in 2016, his methods and management style have consistently been under the microscope, including a past incident where he was accused of manhandling a female reporter—an allegation he denied.
Despite these controversies and a somewhat diminished role in Trump's 2024 campaign, Lewandowski remains a prominent figure in Trump's political sphere. As for his next steps post-DHS, the future remains uncertain, with no immediate comments from Lewandowski or the White House regarding his potential continuation in government roles.
