Democrats are intensifying their strategy as midterm elections approach, spotlighting Republican support for the ongoing military conflict in Iran. VoteVets Action Fund is spearheading a $250,000 advertising campaign that debuts Wednesday, targeting Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R-Wis.) for his endorsement of the war. This move marks one of the Democrats' first major financial commitments to this issue since President Donald Trump's controversial assault on Iran over a month ago.
As concerns mount within the GOP about the war's effect on rising prices potentially damaging their electoral prospects, the new ad campaign takes a direct shot at Van Orden, a combat veteran considered vulnerable in the upcoming elections. The ads criticize him for supporting a substantial $200 billion funding increase for military operations in Iran amidst escalating fuel costs and his past calls for cuts to the Department of Veterans Affairs.
The campaign highlights the broader Democratic critique that the Trump administration's foreign expenditures are exacerbating the domestic cost of living while neglecting veterans' needs. A Marine Corps veteran voices the ad, expressing the everyday financial burden of the war on ordinary Americans and questioning Van Orden's priorities.
VoteVets, known for supporting Democratic veterans for office, plans to extend this advertising approach to other battleground districts. They aim to challenge GOP veterans who, according to VoteVets, blindly follow Trump despite his previous promises to avoid protracted conflicts.
Max Rose, a former Democratic Representative and senior adviser to VoteVets, emphasized the alignment of voter sentiment against the war's economic repercussions. He expressed the organization's commitment to holding Republican veterans accountable in the House.
Responding to the campaign, Van Orden dismissed VoteVets as trivial within the veteran community and reiterated his support for Trump's military strategies, although he opposes deploying ground troops in Iran. He underscored the value of American lives and the longstanding conflict with Iran.
The advertisement will be broadcast during NCAA games and other live sports events, and will also appear on various media platforms including radio, streaming services, and social media.
This aggressive Democratic push comes as other aligned groups engage in similar tactics. For example, the Battleground Alliance PAC recently flew a banner over a Pennsylvania baseball game criticizing Republican Rep. Ryan Mackenzie for his voting record on Iran, linking it to higher gasoline prices.
As the political and economic stakes of the Iran conflict continue to escalate, the Democratic strategy is clear: link Republican war support to rising living costs and veteran neglect, aiming to sway voter sentiment in critical districts.
