Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, is poised to testify before the House Oversight Committee as part of its ongoing probe into the activities of Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender. Scheduled for June 10, Gates will participate in a transcribed interview, a source close to the committee revealed under condition of anonymity.
The request for Gates' testimony, issued on March 3, marks a significant step in the investigation. A spokesperson for Gates expressed that he "welcomes" the opportunity to testify. "While he never witnessed or participated in any of Epstein’s illegal conduct, he is looking forward to answering all the committee’s questions to support their important work," the spokesperson stated.
Gates has faced intense scrutiny over his past interactions with Epstein. Released documents have shown Gates in the company of Epstein, and Gates has admitted to having several dinners with him, initially believing Epstein could leverage his connections to raise funds for global health initiatives. However, Gates discontinued these meetings, describing them as “a mistake” in a 2021 interview with PBS NewsHour.
The investigation has seen a lineup of high-profile figures summoned by the committee. Ted Waitt, Gateway founder linked romantically to Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell, is scheduled for April 30. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick will appear on May 6, followed by Tova Noel, the last prison guard to see Epstein alive, on May 18. Lesley Groff, who worked closely with Epstein, is set to testify on June 9.
The transcribed interviews will be conducted behind closed doors, offering a less formal setting than a deposition but still under the scrutiny of the committee. Previously, figures such as former Attorney General Bill Barr, former Labor Secretary Alex Acosta, and Ghislaine Maxwell, who is currently incarcerated, have been interviewed.
The committee has also delved into the connections between Epstein and other notable figures including former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, both of whom have undergone questioning regarding their interactions with Epstein.
As the investigation progresses, the testimonies of these key individuals are expected to shed more light on the extent and nature of Epstein’s network, and possibly, lead to further implications or exonerations of those involved.
