Congress Remains Silent as Trump Issues Stark Threat to Iran

As tensions escalate, President Donald Trump's recent threat to end Iran’s “whole civilization” if demands are not met has gone largely unchecked by a Congress in recess. Early Tuesday, Trump took to social media to declare a deadline for Iran, stating that failure to comply by 8 p.m. would result in unprecedented military action.

While the world reacts with alarm, many U.S. lawmakers have opted for silence or distraction. Representative Eli Crane (R-Ariz.), for example, focused his outrage not on Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric but on a separate issue involving Medicaid and birth tourism on Long Island.

Throughout Tuesday, Congress members from both parties continued with routine updates. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) celebrated the Artemis II mission, and Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.) highlighted a new federal grant, none addressing the president's dire ultimatum.

Speaker Mike Johnson and other top Republicans have not publicly responded, nor have they signaled any intention to return Congress from recess early. Conversely, leading Democrats have expressed vehement opposition. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer labeled Trump "an extremely sick person," and Democratic leaders in the House demanded a session to prevent what they fear could lead to "World War III."

Further igniting congressional division, some Democrats, including Rep. Lateefah Simon (D-Calif.), have called for immediate impeachment proceedings. Meanwhile, former allies like Marjorie Taylor Greene suggest invoking the 25th Amendment, questioning Trump's fitness for office.

Amidst these calls for action, some Republicans like Rep. Nathaniel Moran (R-Texas) have voiced concerns about the moral implications of Trump's threat, emphasizing that such actions do not represent American values. Others, like Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.), interpret Trump's words as a harsh negotiating tactic rather than a genuine intent to engage in conflict.

As the 8 p.m. deadline approaches, the global community watches anxiously, hoping for a resolution that avoids conflict. Meanwhile, Trump remains steadfast, hinting at severe consequences in a conversation with Fox News host Bret Baier: "If we get to that point, there is going to be an attack like they have not seen."

The situation remains fluid as lawmakers and citizens alike weigh the balance between diplomatic strategy and the potential for catastrophic military action.
