Liberal Wave Continues in Wisconsin as Chris Taylor Secures Supreme Court Seat

Chris Taylor, a progressive figure in Wisconsin's judicial landscape, clinched a decisive victory in the state Supreme Court race on Tuesday, signaling a continuing shift to the left in the state's political climate. This win not only marks another triumph for liberals but also expands their majority on the Wisconsin Supreme Court, now standing at 5-2.

Taylor, who previously served as a Democratic state representative before becoming a state appellate judge, overcame conservative opponent Judge Maria Lazar. This victory underscores a broader trend of liberal successes in recent elections, which some analysts suggest heralds challenges for the GOP as the November midterms approach.

The string of liberal victories began post-2019, a year when conservatives last celebrated a narrow Supreme Court win. Following that, liberal justices Jill Karofsky, Janet Protasiewicz, Susan Crawford, and now Chris Taylor, have all secured their seats with relative ease, reflecting a leftward tilt among Wisconsin's spring electorate.

Looking ahead, the current composition of the court is poised to maintain a liberal majority until at least 2030, assuming all justices serve their full terms. This extended liberal dominance is pivotal as it comes at a time when the court has been active in shaping state policy. Notably, the court played a crucial role in redrawing legislative maps in 2023, effectively ending a longstanding GOP gerrymander, and in 2025, it overturned the state’s 176-year-old abortion ban.

Despite the clear liberal preference in spring elections, the upcoming November gubernatorial race is expected to be more competitive. Wisconsin’s political battleground is notorious for its narrow margins in fall elections. The race will see top Democrats like Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez, and former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes vying for a chance to contest against Trump-endorsed Rep. Tom Tiffany.

This Supreme Court victory, while significant, didn't capture as much attention as last year's race, which involved high-profile interventions including financial backing from Elon Musk against Susan Crawford. Musk's involvement underscored the high stakes attributed to these judicial contests, seen by some as pivotal to broader national and cultural issues.

As Wisconsin continues to navigate these politically transformative times, the outcomes of these judicial races will likely have a lasting impact on the state’s jurisprudence and overall political landscape well into the next decade.
