Rev. Al Sharpton's National Action Network Draws Political Heavyweights and Highlights His Enduring Influence

The 35th convention of Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network (NAN) has become a pivotal gathering in the political landscape, attracting a slew of high-profile figures and potential 2028 presidential candidates to New York. This year's attendees include Governors Wes Moore from Maryland, JB Pritzker from Illinois, and Pennsylvania's Governor Josh Shapiro, alongside Senators and former Vice President Kamala Harris.

These political luminaries are converging at a time when Rev. Sharpton's influence appears more significant than ever. According to Harlem Assemblymember Jordan Wright, “If you want to go somewhere in the City of New York, in anything, whatever your profession is, you’ve got to come to the Dr. Rev. Al Sharpton.”

This wasn’t always the case. Former New York mayors Ed Koch and Rudy Giuliani once saw Sharpton as a divisive figure. Today, however, he is a sought-after ally and advisor, evidenced by Governor Kathy Hochul’s remarks: “He deserves the respect of everyone in this country,” she said. Hochul recalls consulting Sharpton immediately upon learning she would become governor, a testament to his pivotal role in political and public spheres.

Sharpton’s sway was unmistakable last year when New York's mayoral candidates visited his House of Justice in Harlem to pay their respects. His political maneuvers included support for Andrew Cuomo during the primary and a public critique of mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani's endorsement choices. Sharpton’s endorsement carries weight, as demonstrated when he symbolically raised Mamdani's hand post-victory, likening it to a boxing match triumph.

Moreover, Sharpton's recent endorsement of Harris for a second look as a presidential candidate underscores his strategic use of influence to shape political narratives. “I don't know if she's gonna run, but I see her [facing] a lot of sexism and racism,” Sharpton pointed out, advocating for Harris by highlighting her historical vote tally only second to Donald Trump.

His comments on Harris, along with his actions during the mayoral race, illustrate not only his political clout but also his role in championing justice and equality. Sharpton’s enduring presence at the helm of NAN and his ability to convene powerful figures underscore his status as a pivotal figure in American politics. As political leaders continue to seek his counsel and presence, Sharpton's influence remains as relevant and powerful as ever, shaping the landscape of political dialogue and action in America.
